So yesterday was my 30th, but it was also the day my father passed away. At 6:45AM he breathed his last after a long decline. Long enough that I was so prepared and at peace with the eventuality, that the hospital and hospice workers were consistently caught off guard by my usual charming, upbeat, funny disposition, even when they woke me up at 6:55AM to drop that news on me. A disposition which I, largely, inherited from him. I called it as soon as he went into hospice on Friday that he would croak on my birthday, and nothing is funnier to me or more emblematic of our dynamic. He never had it easy from the start, and wasn’t in the business of making things easy for himself, either. (Insert cliché about apples falling from tree or chips from old block) But when he was up, and in a good mood, it could be absolutely infectious. He knew everyone in town, to the point where I loathed going places together as a kid. We’d even go out of town and run into people he knew, Infamously at the hospital here in Durham once. And I’ll be damned if I haven’t turned out the same way. There’s no sadness here, we made our peace with it, and with each other. I always thought it was hilarious how much I look like my mother and act like him, like duplicates of each. If there’s anything you can do for me, it is take these next words to heart: “Save your regrets for the dead. There is always the chance to make it good with the living. Even if it doesn’t feel that way now.” So here’s to David Earl Bullock, AKA David Hester. 1957-2020
